As I have told you before, I had gone to Helsinki for The Way We Live Next event last year and Nokia had some really interesting demos from the work being done at the Nokia Research Center. There I was fortunate to witness and be able to witness, interview and film a demo of the Explore & Share concept that allows wireless data transfer at very high speeds.

The setup is based on a new radio technology built from a scratch. At Nokia house it was being demoed on a specially modded N900 and as you can see in the video below, an entire album was bought and transferred in under 10 seconds. For some reason I missed publishing this video before, and was reminded by Nokia Conversation’s post about Explore & Share today.

This demo unit sees you place your device on a ‘writer’ which is connected to a separate touchscreen monitor. This new radio tech forms a short-range connection between the writer and the device, and doesn’t use any other radio networks – the writer is immediately paired with and recognizes your handset, and instantly brings up relevant content that is available for it on the large touchscreen monitor. From here you simply tap to transfer the apps, music albums, games, apps, videos and other extras you fancy, direct to your phone in a flash.

Of all the demos that we have seen from the Nokia research Center, this is one I’d really like to see go mainstream.

At ‘The Way We Live Next‘ event I was fortunate to get an opportunity to interview Ms. Purnima Kochikar, Vice President, Forum Nokia and Developer Community, who is responsible for strategy and growth opportunities with Nokia’s third party developers to create a vibrant Nokia ecosystem.

Over the course of 30 minutes we able to cover a number of subjects including:

• The number of applications on the Ovi Store and Symbian application visibility in general.
• Why should developers have to pay to get on the Ovi Store, even if they are going to give away their apps for free?
• The surge in developer interest as far as Maemo goes.
• The possibility to Nokia opening up the Ovi Store to devices from other manufacturers.

I have trimmed down the video to a little over 13 minutes. Since YouTube only accepts videos under 10 minutes, I have uploaded the interview to Vimeo (embedded below) and Blip.tv.

While editing the video I realised that I should listen more while interviewing someone and not let the lawyer in me get the better of the conversation. Therefore, I would like to especially thank Ms. Kochikar for her time and patience.

Nokia has just released Qt 4.6, the first release of Qt to natively support both Symbian and Maemo. Why Qt is important is because it enables the creation of applications which can run on both platforms yet be born from a single code base. In other words, the developer can make an application once and then supply it both for Symbian and Maemo devices.

This is the tool Nokia is looking at to harmonise software development across its different platforms. Qt also supports Windows 7, Apple Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and Maemo 6. At the Way We Live Next event at Nokia House, I can able to catch a demo of how this will work and ask a couple of questions about it, the video is embedded below.

It has been quite some time since I got back from Finland and The Way We Live Next 3.0 event. So therefore I would like to apologies for not bringing you all these awesome videos, demos and interviews sooner, but hopefully the content will be able to make up for it.

So starting today you can expect a whole lot of coverage from the event, and to kick things off here is a video showing what it feels to be inside Nokia House. In addition to trying to show the areas we had access to, I spent some time at the gallery where Nokia keeps all its phones, the first one to the latest. So if you are a fan of relics, this video is for you.

Next, is a video of the Nokia Universe i.e. some interesting facts about Nokia and its devices. This video was shown during the first keynote of the event which was conducted by Mary McDowell, Executive Vice President, Chief Development Officer, Nokia.

Things have been a little hectic for me lately, but that will not stop me for bringing you the N97 Mini unboxing, filmed in Helsinki on the first day of ‘The Way We Live Next 3.0′ event.

The video is divided into two parts, the first is a good old unboxing and the second is a N97 Mini overview and comparison with the N97. If I sound a little tired, it is because of all the interview and demoes that I had earlier in the day. Stay tuned for a lot of ‘TWWLN‘ content in the coming days. But for now, its all about the Mini.

I have the immense pleasure of telling you that in a few minutes I will be boarding a plane for Helsinki to attend this year’s ‘The Way We Live Next 3.0′ event at Nokia House. ‘The Way We Live Next 3.0’, in Nokia’s words, aims at providing a dynamic experience, co-created by the community, arranged by Nokia and focused on developing new business opportunities. It offers products, services and solutions that connect communities, help realize potential, entertain and celebrate people’s lives.

At the event we will hear from a host of speakers including Peter Schneider, Head of Maemo Marketing at Nokia, Mary McDowell, Nokia’s Chief Development Officer, Purnima Kochikar, head of Forum Nokia & Developer Community, Henry Tirri, head of Nokia Research Center and Teppo Paavola, who leads the Mobile Financial Services team (Nokia Money). We will also hear from Shaun Puckrin of the Symbian Foundation.

Apart from the various keynotes, I am also looking forward to the demo area where Nokia will be showing off some of the latest devices, applications, services and concepts. But the thing I am especially glad about is the opportunity of meeting many Nokia employees who create the devices, services and apps we use and trying to understand their perspective.
