I have had the N96 for a long time now and yet I had decided against reviewing. The reason was simple the firmware on the device was bad, to the point that it made using the N96 a complete pain. However, the much awaited version 12 firmware has come and all of that is thankfully history and the N96 has redeemed itself. The problem with the N96 has been the delay in its shipping (February announcement – September shipping) as well as the fact that Nokia launched the N85, a …
Firmware, N96 »
To the absolute joy of many N96 owners, the much awaited v12.043 firmware is now available both via the NSU and over-the-air (OTA). The NSU version is about 120MB while the OTA version is a around the 2.5 MB mark. This update brings improvements to the speed, camera, WIFI performance amongst other things and should transform the N96 experience for us. It will hopefully help realise its full potential, a definate must do.
Since the device supports user data preservation, theoretically all your data would be preserved. However, a backup never …
Face The Task, N-Gage »
If you recall, the third task in N96 Challenge to win you five N96 trials was to play a video on the TV via the N96’s TV-Out feature. The catch was that they want the projection needed to be full of ‘fireworks’, now of course they did not mean ‘fireworks’ literally.
I tried to rake my brain, read through some of the cool ideas you had sent in and still couldn’t think of an appropriate video to project. So with thought that was it time for the Ninja to relax and …

I have a strange love and hate relationship with the N96. On the days that I carry my E71, I miss the gaming, music and the camera of the N96 and when I have the N96 I can’t wait to get back to the E71 because of the battery life and speed. However, that might soon change.
You might have noticed that inspite of having the N96 with me for quite a while, I’m yet to publish its review. The reason is the even with the current v11 firmware the phone …

The third and penultimate task in the N96 Challenge is here and I am thinking Deja Vu! If you recall the last task was to stream live video from the N96 and since I had no connectivity, I shot the video using the N96 and then played it back on the TV via the N96 and used the second N96 to live QIK the stream. Now the current task also revolves around TV-Out.
I simply need to play a video on the TV via the N96’s TV-Out feature, the catch is …

If you look at the N96, everything about it screams VIDEO. The 2.8″ screen, VGA capture at 30 FPS, 16GB of storage for recording and storage, the dual LED that can be used as while recording and lastly, its box itself – from which the above picture comes. Anyone would think that Nokia has gone all in for making it into a video production and consumption monster. At least I did, before I had the following incredibly frustrating experience. My videos have not been set ‘free’.
Yesterday I set out to …

QIK Video Is Here
One more step closer to winning 5 N96 trials for you – Task II is now complete. The difficulty I had was the lack of 3G which would have enabled me to stream content ‘live’, however I had an idea that would not only enable me to show off the N96’s streaming capability via either QIK or Flixwagon but also showcase its TV-out functionality.
The work around in my mind for the lack of 3G problem was simple. I shot the video using the N96 and then played …

I had been away these past few days, attending a competition which I am pleased to say, I was successful at. Today when I got back, I had an old fashioned scroll waiting for me. The scroll that would reveal the second task in the Face The Task Challenge to win to five N96 trials for you. (I really love this form of communication).
This task, which may appear to be simple, is a little complicated for me. All I need to do is stream live video from the N96, but …

There has been a lot of Ninja action around the blogosphere lately and while things were pretty quite here at The Symbian Blog, but not anymore. Those of you who saw the N96 Unboxing Video must have seen that I had received the first of four tasks to try and win N96 trials for five of you readers.
The task was simple, I had to take geo-tagged phone of the Ninja and upload it via NokiaVine. The catch was that they didn’t want it to be a ‘run of the mill’ …
