In the comments section of the QWERTY v. T9 speed test article, Tim mentioned an application called T9 Nav which I have only been able to try it today and it has blown my mind.

T9 Nav is a mobile search application that lets you find anything on your phone by just typing in the first few letters of whatever you’re looking for. As soon as you press a number, it starts looking for anything on your device that matches the numbers or the letters on that key. For example if you press “2” it finds any contacts, calendar items, ringtones, applications, bookmarked websites or anything else beginning with 2, a, b or c. Read on for a complete run through.

Once installed, much like Vista, the application indexes all your files be it songs, contacts, bookmarks and so on. It features an auto start option so you don’t need to worry about launching it everytime, it however remains visible in the open applications and doesn’t feature a hidden mode so far.

The place where the application is especially useful is if you have a lot of applications installed and they are kept within folders and sub folders; now in order to launch them all you need to do is key in their name. This application also betters Handy Taskman’s search and launch functionality by giving direct, from the standby screen, access.

As you press more keys it continues to refine the results, when you see what you want in the list, just click on it and the application will take you there. Here are a few screengrabs from my play with T9 Nav.

1. Trying to open ‘Notes’ by typing its T9 equivalent.

2. An example of filtration with increased typing.

3. Reaching ‘Clock’ with three key presses.

4. Contacts, my name.

5. The ‘-’ in the name doesn’t matter.

OTHER EXAMPLES

(While this seems to work for most applications, on the N82 curiously the Music player and Camera don’t show up when their name is keyed in. Most likely this is a Beta issue and will be sorted out. If something else doesn’t work, please leave a comment.)

The newer Eseries devices like the E71 have brought such access from the standby screen functionality to contacts, in a very polished manner but this is taking it to a completely new level.

I still dig the class and options a simple right press of the D pad gives but for those Nseries siblings or other S60 devices who lack such functionality, T9 Nav is god sent. The application is still in Beta and you might experience certain problems while using it, but fortunately the developers are listening and also be sure to send in feedback or suggessions so that we may have a better application.

Download Link.

A little while back I wrote a N82 and N95 8GB comparison to pick out a winner and although close but the 8GB won.
A little while back I wrote a N82 and N95 8GB comparison to pick out a winner and although close but the 8GB won. When we look at the Eseries for a flagship, there is only one device looking us in the face, the E90. While Nseries has a tendency of churning out flagship devices at a quick clip, this isn’t quite the case with Eseries. Traditionally Eseries has been all business with poor cameras, the old pop port, not so great music and so on while the Nseries has been all of that and then some more. When the E90 came out, it bridged this gap, at least theoretically with a 3.2 auto focus camera, stereo speakers, A2DP, GPS almost everything that one looks for in a music phone. But is it enough to make a long time Nseries owner jump ship?

This post pits two unlikely phones, flasgships of two different series against each other and we try and pick a winner.

INTRODUCTION

E90- The E90 is the latest Communicator from Nokia and built on the same form factor as the previous 9xxx series. However it is now based on the S60 platform. The best aspect of this device is that the outer and the inner screen have both been integrated and whatever goes on, on one, when you change screen is immediately available on the other. This makes it a complete phone even if we for a minute forget it has something inside too.

N95 8GB- The 8GB is a slider based on the N95 and tries to cover up whatever fallies it had. It is a good looking device that fits in the hand well, the build quality is good and more importantly it is top spec for today’s standards.

SPECIFICATIONS

E90- The E90 boasts of a huge 800 x 352 pixels, 16 million color internal display and the outer is brought up by a 240 x 320 pixels screen. It also features a 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS, 2.5mm jack, mini USB, port , microSD slot, full backlit QWERTY and a 1500 mAh battery. What is notably missing is TV Out.

N95 8GB- The 8GB on the other hand has even better specs with a 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens camera, GPS, a 3.5mm plug, miniUSB, TV Out and a large 2.8″ 240 x 320 pixel display. The battery on this device is 1200 mAh.

CAMERA

The E90 packs a 3.2 megapixel camera, however without the Carl Zeiss branding. The pleasant surprise here was that Nokia decided to include VGA video recording at ‘upto’ 30 FPS. In comparison to the Nseries giants who can do VGA, the E90 seems to struggle a little more with low light conditions. As far as still photography goes it does well for random shots, however you will not carry it along as your only camera. The 8GB on the other hand can easily take that role.

MUSIC

Considering its an Eseries taking on an Nseries, most would jump to the conclusion that this is no contest, but the E90 surprises. It features stereo loudspeakers with decent volume and a 2.5mm jack when used with an adapter and headphones that can put the 8GB to shame. There is the same 8 band equiliser, however support for formats like wma is missing on the E90. The radio is plain and not the Visual Radio found on the Nseries, in fact its reproduction also seemed worse. This round will therefore still go to the 8GB due to better loudspeakers and the 3.5mm plug; narrow victory though.

CONNECTIVITY

Both devices are HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth and IR capable thus similar in terms of connectivity. However inspite of having WiFi it does not feature the Home Media client that allows us to stream/copy music and video over a WiFi network. This is sorely missed.

SCREEN

This is an interesting battle. A 2.8″ 240 x 320 screen v/s a 800 x 352 pixel widescreen. Lets examine it with the help of various tasks they are used for.

WEB BROWSING – The E90 is a clear winner in this department due to its huge inner screen, which on most occasions displays websites in the same manner as you would view on a laptop with almost no horizontal scrolling required.

PHOTOS- When it comes to displaying photos the E90 does have its share of difficulties. There is no slideshow! While the 8GB displays them beautifully with the Ken Burns (Pan and Scan) effect. Individual photographs do look good on the E90’s Hi-Res screen though.

VIDEO- Wide screen video is always a pleasure to watch, however its not as freely available as we’d like. The real player does not even utilise the entire screen and the videos are shown in a small box and the actual physical area covered is less than on the 8GB. When it comes to playback with CorePlayer, full screen video is possible because of the program’s rich features. But if the video is high bitrate and high resolution, then it stutters to the point where it becomes pointless to watch. Bottomline being that you need to convert video to suit the E90 and only then will you be pleased with the results. Therefore because of the additional work required in the E90’s case the winner turns out to be the 8GB. Moreover the loudspeakers on the backside, due to their positioning, also do not help the E90.

TEXT ENTRY

There is a debate about T9 v/s QWERTY and I personally prefer T9. The good thing about the E90 is that it has both. I have found myself a lot of times turning to T9 when I needed to enter a lot of text. The 8GB features only T9 and thats where it obviously looses out. The QWERTY is great for entering usernames, passwords, filling forms etc.

SIZE AND WEIGHT

This clearly is a negative for the E90, but the question is does it pack enough to make the user ignore this aspect? The communicator mode requires two hands to operate it and sometimes becomes a problem, specially say when you want to use the device lying down. I have found myself reaching for the N95 on a number of occasions if I wanted to browse while still in bed. Its normal phone mode has a much smaller screen than the 8GB, fully capable though. It is good enough for on the go browsing or any other task, but if one is to use such a huge phone in that mode on most occassions, it kinda defeats the purpose of buying a E90.

One contributor to the E90’s bulk is the 1500 mAh battery which I love. The 8GB on very heavy usage barely makes it through a day while the E90 can do almost two. When you feel the battery is running low, you can restrict yourself to the E90’s outer screen and thus save some juice while on the 8GB the entire 2.8″ will light up no matter what. I personally do not mind the bulk much and the E90’s all round capabilities still win it for me.

WE HAVE A WINNER, BUT DOES THE WINNER TAKE ALL?

I am writing piece from the prespective of an existing N95 owner who is looking to upgrade. What options does he have? N82? N95 8GB? Both of those devices are very similar to the N95 and offer benefits such as xenon and better battery or large screen and better battery. Here is where the E90 comes in. It offers both a better battery and a larger screen.

The dilema I faced when I was looking for an upgrade for myself was between the 8GB and the E90. Since I had no plans to sell/dispose the N95 off, I went in for the E90 because I always would have recourse to the camera or TV out whenever I needed it, its just a matter of swaping the microSD. Thus this was more about making a combo rather than one device.

Had I bought the N82 or the 8GB it would have rendered my N95 useless and give me very little in the way of a new experience. But would I have bought the E90 if I did not have a 5 megapixel device as a back up? The answer is a resounding no. So if you are going to have just one device, choose between the N82 and the 8GB, if not, E90 is definately the way to go! The E90 wins it, but on the back on a Nseries. It doesn’t take all!

The N95 8GB or the N95-2 is the successor to the N95 Classic (N95-1).
The N95 8GB or the N95-2 is the successor to the N95 Classic (N95-1). A lot has been already said about the device both positive and negative; it has generally been dubbed as Nokia’s answer to the loads of complaints people have had with the original. Now being a device which benefited from public feedback, Nokia had to get this right. This post investigates how successful has it been in the endeavour.

(Before you get started here, if you already have not, I’d recommend reading my N82 v N95 8GB post as it covers a lot of what the 8GB can and cannot do.)

There isn’t much separating the two N95’s with both boasting similar specifications in terms of the Camera, GPS or Music. However there are differences although subtle at times which in the end matter to a great degree. It will be prudent to summarise the basic differences and their impact.

SCREEN

The black colour and the screen are probably the most discernable differences between the two. The increase in size is just .2″ however in practicality it looks huge. The screen looks just splendid. There has been a lot of criticism heaped on Nokia for not increasing the resolution of the screen along with the physical size, but in reality it is not an issue at all. The screen looks nice and crisp and unless you are used to a higher resolution, it won’t even be a factor that comes to your mind.

BATTERY

This till date remains one of the biggest follies of the N95 Classic. To correct this, the 8GB came with a 1200 mAh battery, a full 150 mAh more than its predecessor. The bigger battery has made quite a difference and made me consider getting the 8GB for this reason only. On average usage the battery lasts about 1.5 days and if you press it, on a full recharge it will at least get you through the day without the dreaded low battery warning. Heavy video watching will bring the average lower though.

CAMERA

On specifications both devices have the same camera, however practically the N95 Classic is much better. For one it has a cover to protect the lens from accidental and incidental scratches and second there is no tinge to the photos as there is in the 8GB owing to the lens being made a little differently perhaps.

When it came to video recording my unit running v15 firmware disappointed me no end. There is a lag after every 3 seconds or so while recording video and it makes video capture pointless. I hope this is not a case of slow internal memory and the latest v20 firmware does something to help. This could have been a case of my own unit being faulty, but I have seen others users have this problem too. However, there are people who do not have this issue. The only work around there is to this issue is to use the internal memory for storage and keep taking short 4-5 minute clips, transfer them to the memory card and then shoot again.

HARDWARE

This is probably the best change with the N95 8GB benefitting immensely. The slide on it is nothing short of beautiful and gives the phone a very nice feel. It is way better than the N95 and glides effortlessly and seems much more durable; if my N95’s slide could and is still surviving for more than a year, this will too, easily. There is one thing I must point out though, like the N95 usually collected scratches under the numeric ‘3′ key – so does the 8GB but because it’s black the scratches are not that visible.

The complete D pad structure has also become narrower in order to accommodate the bigger screen. Does it make a difference? Absolutely not, in fact I like this one better. The buttons have been given a much more of a distinct feel and incline which make for great comfort. Current N95 owners might feel that it might be an issue or that it makes the phone look bad, I did before I actually played with the phone, but believe me you’ll gradually, if not upfront, like this setup better.

INTERNAL MEMORY

Is it a pain or is it a pain? My experience with it is bad, right from it not being useful for video capture to making mass memory not an option for message storage because of how slow it makes accessing messages. I have not even talked about transferring data via the super slow USB connection. On most days transferring video/music would be a job that would take hours, the average transfer rate I would get is 750kb a second! I really missed the ability to swap out the card and user my laptop’s card reader for filling it up. However since the video playback on the screen looked so great the device makes one put up with it without flinching much.

MISCELLANEOUS

There have been quite a few other minor changes too. The multimedia keys are have been remodelled a little and are now much more useable with the buttons protruding a little. On the software side, the old multimedia menu has made way for the new one, which I must say I’m not too fond of. That being said, Mark over at the Nokia Blog has found that it is at least useful for multitasking in the web browser.

IS THE N95 8GB FUTURE PROOF?

I will resist the temptation to compare it to the N96 and we’r not quite sure what the N96 will finally be with there even being a xenon flash addition rumour and also because I only played with a proto running development stage firmware on launch at the Mobile World Congerss. So we’ll take that debate up when the N96 actually arrives. However we can dwell on what we can expect generally. The 8GB has almost everything the N96 has, the same screen, camera, GPS and form factor. However what it doesn’t have is 16GB internal storage at 5 times faster data transfer and an additional card slot. It also doesn’t have DVB-H and Feature pack 2. But what it has is 3D acceleration and a bigger battery. If we come to think of it there is nothing substantial that the N96 is getting and the faster data transfer might just be bartered off against better battery life. As we know today none of these devices has a xenon flash and to my mind that is the future. So if I were to label any device as future proof at least for the next year it would be the N82!

That apart, my current device of choice would be the N95 8GB, however if I already own an N95, would I buy it? The answer is yes and I almost did. However since I decided too keep my N95 in addition to getting that one more device, the N95 8GB did not cut it for me. For anyone else without an N95 or looking to discard the N95 for a newer phone – this can be that phone. When I first held the N95 8GB and played with it a little I thought to myself ‘this thing is miles ahead of the N95′ and if Nokia can fix the video recording bug, it truly will be!

In the next post, in this series, the N95 8GB will take on a very unlikely competitor!

The latest v20 firmware on the N95 and firmwares of certain other phones have removed the Themes icon from the main menu and it is only accessible from Tool>Settings and so on. This is inconvenient for those who frequently change their themes or people new to S60.
So in case you want the Themes icon back just install this small utility called ’Themes Launcher’ created by Sittiphol Phanvilai.
Download!
Update: If you do not want to install, Ish’s comment might help!

Sliding the phone to the closed position to end a call is one feature that is usually built into sliders. The N81 has a proper menu which allows one to customise slide behaviour, while this is curiously absent in all N95 siblings. However, not anymore. This small utility which lacks any UI when installed ends a call when the slide is closed – simple as that.

One aspect of the Nseries WiFi phones I am sure not a lot of us put into play is UPnP. I for one have hardly used this capability on my N95 which actually is very useful. Considering the fact that you can stream all your pictures, music and video to your phone from your PC or any other so device setup, the Home Media application is neat. But what takes the cake is using TV out in tandem with UPnP. Its pretty nifty to stream pictures from a PC in some room to your TV via the phone.

In this post guest author Anuj Singhal talks about how to set it up and utilize the benefit of say a 120GB harddisk on the phone! Note: Although this post is based on the N95 it may be valid for other wifi capable devices also.

I was going through the internet searching for something new to do with my N95 and found something really interesting, you can read about it here. Although the concept of sharing media using WLAN is not new and UPnP has been around for sometime but it was very poorly implemented on the N95 in the earlier firmwares. It seems that in the hype surrounding the inclusion of on demand paging and NGage application in the v20 firmware for N95 we missed a very neat little improvement. Nokia has improved the UPnP interoperability so to say, to understand what it means we must understand that the UPnP defines three types of devices:

UPnP Servers – These store things like music, movies and pictures.
UPnP Renderers – These play music or display images/movies.
UPnP Control Points – These tell UPnP renderers what to play/display from which uPNP server.

N95 could only act as a UPnP control point with earlier firmwares and used to have a PC software on the CD to be installed on the computer which used to act as a renderer. The N95 could play the media files on the PC after copying them to itself.

Now with v20 N95 has got both server and rendering abilities, that means you can actually stream media files through WLAN from your PC to the N95 and play them on the phone.

I personally use it with my laptop running windows XP and it works just fine. You will need to setup a home network first (or an ad-hoc network if you don’t have a router) The detailed how to on setting up and ad-hoc network can be found here for Windows Xp and here for Vista.

After the adhoc network is up and running, on your N95 go to Menu- Tools – Connectivity- Home media. This should automatically run a wizard on the first run, otherwise go to options and run the wizard. You should be able to setup the WLAN home media network. You can choose to share the media stored on the phone with the home network during the setup.

Now on the PC, run the windows media player (I use WMP 11), go to Tools- Options- Library. You will see an option to configure sharing, click on it and you will be able to see an unknown device, select it and click allow. (You can also configure what all media to share)

Now whenever you need to play media on the phone, goto home media and click browse home, it will show you PC listed there, on selecting it you’ll see your shared media devided into music, video, pictures and playlists.

Now the catch is when you want to play a song or say view a picture, you have to select it and then click options- click play and select on device. then wait till the file loads. It’ll take few moments, be patient and then it will play, you can control it just like the music player.

There is an option to copy your music onto the device too. You can also view the pictures stored on the PC in a similar fashion.

How did it work out for you?

For the other devices too, such as the N82, N81 and the others with decent ammount of RAM already, multiple windows on high speed wifi/3G connections is something practical. There are two methods I have been using to open multiple windows, here’s a rundown of both of them.

Using the Web Feeds Option

- Launch the browser and open a website as you normally would.

- Goto the web feeds option in the bookmarks and open any feed you may have subscribed to. (If not then simply goto a website of your choosing which has a feed, press the Left Softkey and select Subsribe and the name of the feed. It will then show up in your list of feeds and just refresh it once.)

- Now open any post from that feed and select the “Full Article” option. This will open the post in a new window.

Glide comes with all the essentials built-in such as Office applications Write (Word-like) and Present (Powerpoint-like), blog publishing, music, video players, and photos viewer with alternate thumbnail view support that makes you feel that it’s a complete OS. A toned down version of all of these accessible from the phone.

Although the main site in in flash, the registration link works well in the S60 browser and I was able to register from the mobile itself. Glide supports a various mobile operating systems. After logging in this was the screen I got.

Various everyday applications like email, calender, contacts, bookmarks, chat, photos, videos that are integral to us are also here. The free account gives 2GB worth of storage for any files you may want to upload.

Documents

The on mobile Documents applications lets us create & save documents and download, if needed. It even allows editing and exporting the document to a variety of formats.

Music

But what really caught my eye was the streaming option. They have some featured content ready to stream and plus we can stream any of the music we uploaded. Same with videos! I am considering using the 2GB entirely for this purpose. Having instant access to my music anywhere from almost any device is great.

Photos

The archive for photos is also impressive! It gives you the ability to apply effects to your images on the fly and there are loads of effects to choose from.

Contacts, Calender & Bookmarks

Once you import all your contacts over, it works really well. Options to edit and download the contact as a vCard also exist. Import of Contacts and calendar from Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, the Windows Address book, and your bookmarks from Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox is supported. You can also add any of these online too.

The above are just a few of the features I have been able to try and too not compltely as I wanted to share this as soon as possible. Its 5:30 in the morning and I haven’t slept all night, so in case this looks messed up please bear with me.

The practical utility of such a service is questionable, but one thing for sure, what it does it, does really well. There are somethings the limited processing power of the phones cannot do and here is a service that can supplement them well. It is definately worth a shot. Do share your experiences.

S60 wizard Samir has officially released the rotateME beta 5 for the general public! It is one of the most widely awaited applications ever and is compatible with the N95, N95 8GB and the N82 while a special version for N80, N73, E65, N81 is in the works.

Beta 5 brings a world of improvements, the biggest for me is the ability to hide the application from the default task manager! This is something I really wanted as it makes the experience complete, it is as if the rotate functionality comes inbuilt! The options to adjust sensitivity and reactivity work well and allow you to control the angle of tilt at which the screen rotates. The auto start option is also present. All in all a complete package. Wonderful work from a great man! Cheers to you mate! In case you can spare it, donate Samir a few PayPal dollars.

Download!

For those new to RotateMe, it is a freeware application which allow you to switch your phone screen from portrait to landscape and vice versa with just a tilt. Here’s rotateMe in action.

Installation Instructions:

- Don’t forget to install N95AccelerometerPlugin.sis

To rotate the screen, keep this application opened and rotate the phone.

You can disable the rotation by pressing simultaneously Pen and Camera keys.

To close rotateMe go to Options -> Exit.

Here’s what the settings allow us to do:

Sensitivity: More sensitivity is set to a high value, more the display will rotate with a minor needing of rotation of the phone.

Reactivity: More this setting is low and more you have to keep your phone in landscape/portrait position to rotate the screen.

Auto Start: Enable this setting to launch rotateMe automatically at the phone boot.

Inactivity Delay: After this delay of inactivity, auto-rotation will be stopped. Press a key, or unlock the keypad, to reactivate auto-rotation.

Priority: High priority allows a better reactivity when big apps are launched.

System App: When activated, this setting prevents rotateMe to be closed by the OS in low RAM conditions.

Hidden App: Enable this setting to hide rotateMe from the tasks list.
