How To Get A Certificate To Sign Unsigned S60 Apps

By - Vaibhav Sharma On 4 July 2009 136 Comments

There are a lot of ‘unsigned’ applications floating around the web, partly because part time developers either do not have the time or money to get their applications signed via the Symbian Signed program. While quite a bit of such applications can be signed via the Open Signed website, some cannot be and quite frankly there are times when we are simply lazy.

For all such reasons it is best to have a developer certificate with which you can sign the files on the phone itself and install without having to bother with any other method. The following tutorial will show you how to get a certificate (generally within three hours) and is much easier than the OPDA method.

HOW TO GET A CERTIFICATE FOR YOUR S60 DEVICE

ed

  • Fill in the required details, use can even use a fake address. Just keep the username and password in mind.

ed

  • Follow the directions in the screenshot.

ed

  • Now enter your IMEI number.

ed

  • The website will display a confirmation.

ed

  • Now the wait begins. When I tried, I got my certificate in about 3 hours time. If you are not already logged in, login to see if your certificate is ready.

ed

  • If you see a screen like the following, it means your certificate is ready for download.

ed

  • Thats it, now simply unzip the file and get signing. There is no need of a Sign Key pass code.

ed

The best part was that I could do all of this lying in bed, right from my N97’s browser. The bottomline being that I got a developer certificate in less that 3 hours without needing a computer. The next step is to sign the application from the phone itself, guide coming soon. So make sure you subscribe via RSS or Twitter.

Thanks Simran!

Do i need to request a certificate everytime i want to sign an unsigned app ? or can one certificate be used multiple times ?

  • Vaibhav Sharma (author) said:

You only need to get the certificate once, after that you can sign as many files as you like.

  • Caycee said:

I followed exactly as indicated in the article but at the last step when I downloaded the zip file there was nothing in it. Empty!! That is really strange!! What did I do wrong?

  • Rishminder said:

Vaibhav i have done it all but cannot seem to get the page where i can download the certs

  • Vaibhav Sharma (author) said:

Rishminder, since the page is in chinese it does become difficult to find the correct tab. But if you try and memorize the place you need to click from the screenshots I am sure you will be able to find the link.

Caycee, I tried getting the cert for another device and it worked for me, so may be you can try again! :)

I’ve managed to download the 3 files as shown in your last step, and unzipped them on my PC’s desktop.

  • Austin8tor said:

If you would like to know how long it will take rather than wait. go to google translater copy the text from where you see that screen with your imei number and paste it in the field. I submitted mine today (23rd July) and I Got this back.

“Your serial number (*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#) has been submitted, the certificate will be held at 9:30 on July 26, 2009 after the entry into force! Please be patient.”

3 days I have to wait lol. I suggest if you are having problems following the screen shots. Copy and paste the whole page.

    Thanks to Vaibhav Sharma

    nice work.

  • Bryan said:

mine as well kip on changing with the date …. now it maeks me wait for 3 more days… how sad as well

  • Vaibhav Sharma (author) said:

It possible that with all the growing cert requests they have been getting (as the site became popular), they are not being able to cope up as quickly as before. This is still the easiest way, if I find something better, I’ll be sure to let you know.

  • nanoy009 said:

yup tnx vaibhav coz the date on getting the certs kip on changing… its almost 6 days now and i havent ogt my certs yet.

  • s1m3n said:

Well, I would change the title of the post, as a 6 day wait period would not qualify as “quickly” even having room full of monkeys typing the certificates themselves. Hope the wait will be worth it…

  • ceroberts75 said:

i tried using all your links to do this, however, thier site must have changed because it does not give me the option to chose the green bar and then enter my imei.

and, since i do not read chinese, ….. :/

can you please update this to reflect what is on the site now?

  • Vaibhav Sharma (author) said:

I just tried it, the layout is the same and the green bar is still there. :)

  • Vaibhav Sharma (author) said:

s1m3n, I have taken your advice and changed the title.

  • Cash said:

I’ve tried this method 2 days ago, and my waiting period will supposedly end on 16th August only. That is 7 days since I registered…
There is no other way to do this? I still have to wait at least 5 days…

  • ceroberts75 said:

1 day, no code. :/ still waiting.

  • Christian said:

I’ve noticed that the site remembers your last action on the site on logut. So, if you get “lost” on the site and don’t find the message box with your IMEI number again, you won’t find it easily after logging in anew either.

The solution is: click on the 14th. symbol from the top in the left hand column (should be a notepad with a pencil) and then on the 2nd tab on the new screen to come back to your message screen.

Btw; I’ve just registered and got the “delivery date” set to Aug. 19th (= 6 days lead time).

    BR,
    Chris

  • spinn said:

It appears that is indeed very busy on that site as I registered today 14th and will have to wait until the 20th. Should have done this a while back I guess. Thats what I get for procrastinating I guess :)

  • Cash said:

It said on the site I had to wait until 16th, and I got it today, the 15th :)

  • curlsky said:

Ok, i followed the tutorial and registered my imei last night. Now i’m supossed to wait till 21st to get my cert (4 days minus few hours cause of the time zone differences;)). I’ll let u know about any progress. By now thanx Vaibhav Sharma for the tutorial, it makes this chinese forum quite easy-to-use!:)

while the .key file opens on my phone, the cer file shows some error. also when i try to sign the files, i have to self sign.

so i have come here to generate new key and certificate… hope it works

Can’t believe it… Waiting since more than a week now, just won;t gice me the certificate. Everytime I look there is a new date. Why do they provide you with a date when in it is not true anyways?

    Wow, I received my certificate… theoretically…
Everything looks like on the picture in the tutorial with one difference, there is no link to start the download… I don’t get it…

  • WPxDominion said:

Great, as I just figured out you don’t get any more certificates but (very slow) downloads of two different sign tools. Still downloading the second one but the first one is in chinese and I can’t see how to get my file properly signed…

Here is the text regarding change from certificates to tools (translated by google):

“With immediate effect, after the success of the certificate application need to use “Mobile home online signature tool” to sign operation; the previous application and binding certificate users can still download the certificate file, you can also use the “mobile home off-line signature tool” to sign.”

  • curlsky said:

Well… my date still keep changing (like yours, guys)…:/

WPxDominion, where did u get the information about these tools instead of certs from?? I don’t see anything like this on my ising account. Was it after your cert had been published (theoretically)??

Damn, i guess most of us desperately need own certs and it looks like chinese are only playing around with us…:/ (hope i’m wrong!)

  • WPxDominion said:

    @ curlsky

Yes, after my (hundredth) date when my certificate should be ready, a big green checkmark like in the tutorial above appeared but there was no link to download anything. Ten minutes later I tried logging in again and instead a simple download link as expected there was a drop down list with two entries, both in Chinese. Downloaded both and the files were called signtool and signtool2. Both are in zip files. However one zip file was corrupt and I was unable to unpack it. The other was ok but I was unable to use the tool as I don’t understand the language at all… lol

Anyways, as I just wanted to add these transitions to my N97, I just payed 5 bucks and received a signed version of the hacking tool you need for that. About 7 hours after payment via paypal I recieved the file and it works fine. Now my N97 is hacked, equipped with nice animations, and makes much more fun…

  • Moe said:

    Hey,

I got the certificate from this site a while back, but everytime I try to install a file like ShakeSMS, after I’ve signed it, I get the error when trying to install: “Cannot install protected content by an untrusted supplier” or something to that effect.

In my app settings, it says not to check, just install.

    What gives?!?

    Thanks!

  • curlsky said:

WPxDominion, thanx for the answere. Now i have the same situation: big green checkmark appeared, there is a dropdown list, two “signing tools” and all the stuff… But no cert:/ And i’m afraid these “tools” are useless. Any idea anyone??

  • naypalm said:

Yeah, I just saw that Signtool and Signtool2 BS on imobile.com.cn. It looks like they gave up on giving out the actual cer and key files and just gave you the signing program for the PC. I think one of them actually does do it online and signs the sis file, but this is useless to me as I like to do it on the fly on my phone. Hopefully a better site will come around and some kind soul will post it up here on thesymbianblog.

  • nowitworks said:

same as above only got to d/l signing tools and no key or cert, but managed to figure out the online signing tool, if it’s any use this is how it worked for me:

    - signtools2.exe is the online signing tool
    - open signtool2.exe, dialog box appears on screen
    - enter your username (registered with imobile) in the top field in that box (field preceded by ‘???:’)
    - press the button (highlighted with green) to the right of that field to confirm your username
    - the next line (preceded by ‘??????SISXX??(????)’) has two buttons – the button on the left is to browse for the application to be signed (once the application is selected it will populate the application box, explained below); the button on the right is to clear the application box
    - the next item is the application box – it will contain the application to be signed; as well as using the buttons described above, you can drag & drop applications into that box
    - below the application box are two buttons – please ignore these until after the next step
    - the very last field (preceded by ‘?????:’) is the location of the output directory – this can be changed using the button to the right of that field
    - now to sign the application return to the two buttons directly below the application box; provided all the fields have been correctly populated then pressing the button on the left will sign the application, sending a copy of the signed application to the output directory you have specified (I haven’t been able to figure out what the button on the right does).

Hope this is some help, sorry it’s a bit long winded

  • TheMurph said:

    @ nowitworks

Thanks for that man, I got my signing tools this morning, and had no idea how to get the damn things to work! I’ve not tried your advice yet, but I will, and hopefully you’ve taken the headache out of it for me.

  • siddharth said:

    thanks nowitworks/…

the method suggested by you has worked for some files.. but in case of others it is giving some error (i think as it is unreadable being in some other irritating language and no signed file is generated..)

but the things are totally different from what Vaibhav Sharma had told like there are no cert / key files inside..

there are 2 tool files –
1 is the phone icon in red
other is some disc in blue

steps told by ‘nowit’ are for the 1st one and they are totally working for some files.

can u provide guide for the blue tool

    thanks

  • nowitworks said:

sorry not sure what the blue tool is, the only things that extract from the zip file for me are signtool (the red icon) and an internet shortcut to imobile.cn (that’s a blue icon on my screen, but don’t know if that’s what you’rereferring to)

  • Brennan said:

i am referring to the other tool. if you go to the page (where you have to download your tools) once again, you will see that just beside the download button there is a another button where you can scroll down. When u do this, there is one more option. Select the other one and then press the blue download button. this will download the other zip file namely ’signtool’.

    just try this.

  • wonderous said:

For those who are frustrated with chinese, that notice translates to:

“To ensure the stability and longevity of our certicate services, newly approved users must sign their application with our online signing application. Users who were previously approved can sign with either of the offline or online signing application, provided that you have downloaded the certicate already.”

    The dropdown menu options are:
    Online Signing Tool
    Offline Signing Tool

  • fender62 said:

solution worked a treat n95 8gb, at least until i upgrade firmware
and see if it works on latest version of n95 8gb anyone confirm?

  • nowitworks said:

(siddharth) -sorry, I misunderstood – like wonderous said one of them is the offline signing tool and the other is the online signing tool. I think you need cert & key files for the offline tool (which will d/l as ’signtool.zip’), it’s the offline tool (which will d/l as signtool2.zip) that I was describing.

“To ensure that the certificate applied for service continuity and stability, from immediate effect, after the success of a new certificate application need to use “Mobile Home Online Signature Tool” to sign operation; the previous application and binding certificate users can still download the certificate file, can either use the “Mobile Home On-line signature tool” to sign, you can also use the “mobile home off-line signature tool” to sign.
    Certificate Status
Your IMEI 3xxxxxxxxxxxxxx corresponds to a certificate in force!
Is valid until October 13, 2012. Off-line Signature Signature Tools Online Tools”.

there is a drop down text box with two options. when i select the 1st option it downloads Signtool2.zip which is 977kb in size and includes signtool.exe and the 2nd option i download is Signtool.zip which is 3.24mb and includes signsis.exe and signtool.exe but there are no .cert or .key files

can you advise me how to obtain them please

  • naypalm said:

The site does NOT give out .cer and .key files anymore. What the DO give out is an online signer to sign your application through. The one you want to use is Signtool2.exe (The first dropdown Link). How you use it is explained HERE : http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/9130/signtool2exe.png

i did what naypalm`s link says … and i have signed my helloOx2 application. i put it on the phone but when to install it`s says online certificate failed … is there any settings to my phone that can fix this?

I tried it and i got the tick mark in the end but i don’t see the same link to download the certificates as shown in the bookmarks… help

  • 3vilMTV said:

I’ve tried it myself, and its done within 1 hour. It wasn’t much of a hassle for me since I can read some Chinese.
Signed a couple of useless unsigned files off the net just to test and works wondrously.
Thanks naypalm for your wonderful screenshots and replies!

    FAQ and HELP

NOTE: The site has changed probably due to symbiansigned.com. DO NOT EXPECT .cer and .key files. You will be download a flash program (scanned with AVG Free, its virus free) which helps you sign your unsigned files WITHOUT you having the .cer and .key files.
So you will not be seeing the same download link or downloaded files as the screenshots you see in the original blog post.

“The site does NOT give out .cer and .key files anymore. What the DO give out is an online signer to sign your application through.”

For those who commented that they have waited for over a day but still see the same page as when they’ve just submitted, it just means you have to refresh the page for some reason. You’ll probably be brought to a login page to relogin with your username (not email) and password. After which you will have to go back to the page.

If I’m not wrong the timezone of the website is GMT+8. I can’t tell if the time is based on the sever or your PC as I’m in the same timezone as it.

If you recieve such a message, (in fact, you should)

    “证书状态
    您的手机串号 358984xxxxxxxxx 对应的证书已生效!
    有效期至2012年09月15日。”
It means it is successful and the date means the date of expiration.

If you need additional help just read naypalm’s replies and screenshots.

“The one you want to use is Signtool2.exe (The first dropdown Link). How you use it is explained HERE : http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/9130/signtool2exe.png

    Once again, thanks naypalm!
    Hope this helps.

Here is the help you guys need:

Since there is only a online tool to sign the files you guys just need to go to the 5th tab on http://isign.imobile.com.cn/upload.php and upload the helloox2.v2.01 to sign it with your details and then apply it to phone, and then … VOILÁ !! You can install everything you want on your phone :)

  • Ferry said:

i dont get an imobile.cer and .key file… but a signtool.zip .. :( maybe you know how to get a cer and key now ?

  • Strommare said:

    Hi guys!
None of the above stated way works for me. Using the signtools2.exe the way nowit and naypalm described doesnät work at all. I get some crazy error message, no words, just a bunch of letters and numbers. I cannot even confirm my usernamne the way you guys explain.

What is wrong, and what can I do to get this or some other way to work. I have been trying out over 10 different ways so sign apps now, yet without any success.

I have a Sony Ericsson Satio btw.

    Please please help me!

  • Naypalm said:

    @Strommare

That error message is normal. It’s basically a “your sis file is signed” message. Look around where you specified your destination (see #4 in picture link below) and you will find your signed sis file.

Also, check and make sure that you followed the steps explained in the image below:

    http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/9130/signtool2exe.png

    Good luck!

I’m sure Naypalm have already said about it no longer giving cert files etc many times. The file (.exe) is an application for you to sign your files online without having a cert.
I’ve posted a quick guide about 14 comments above after doing it myself with the help of Naypalm comments.

locau gave a great idea too.

No problem, Coco. Thkx for letting me know it helped. :)

For those of you getting the 2 different files, unzip sign tool 2. That is the only one you need. Double click the sign tool app. after it is opened enter your user name that you used on the imobile website, enter this on the first line. Next drag your app that you need signed into the large box. the third line is where you will enter the destination folder for the signed app. finally click the button with the 2 chinese letters on them and your done. I just signed magickey with this and it loaded onto my phone perfectly

When I enter my IMEI number in both fields and then click the green button I get an error which roughly translated tells me I have entered an incorrect code. Have tried it about 5 times and it does the same thing. I have definately entered the IMEI code correct. Have double checked it multiple tiomes on my N97.

    Anyone getting the same error?

    Hi

I follow all the instructions to obtain cert and key in the chinese website. And after waiting 1 day, I obtained two files. But there’s no cert and key inside. Only .exe. Two applications “signtool.exe” for the PC.

    Any sugestions? Thanks

    Best regards
