Walkthrough: Ozone – A New Web Browser For S60
Ozone is the latest webkit based browser for S60 devices and boy, is it fast! The browser boasts of “advanced features such as client-side database support, application cache, zooming and multiple windows, but also provides the best web-standards compliant experience that’s available”.
Apart from the speed, the things about the browser that I really liked were the ability to open and manage multiple windows with ease, the ability to download any file irrespective of the extension, something that the default web browser on FP1 and older devices can’t do (or can with a hack), and the auto-complete options. One minus that I could see was that it doesn’t play flash video. Another one is that it can’t seem to handle login pages too well so far.
Following are a few highlights and a screenshot based walkthrough of the browser.
- Intuitive UI and page navigation
- Multiple windows
- Zooming and panning
- Pop-up blocking
- Auto-complete URL editing
- Desktop/mobile mode switch
- Netscape scriptable plugin
- Low memory footprint, works in devices with only 64MB RAM
- Offline Web Applications support including the latest mobile Gmail for iPhone and Android
- High performance disk caching, fast image decoding, favorite icons, bookmark management and advanced HTML, CSS and JavaScript support.

Here’s how the application ones up. It is in alpha right now so there were a few glitches like T9 not working too well at times.
SETTINGS

The screenshots are pretty self explanatory and the settings pretty straightforward. The last screenshot depicts how you cycle through history while browsing.
RENDERING

The rendering is fast and as you would expect on a quality device. There are options to fit the entire page in the phone’s screen width as well.
MULTIPLE WINDOWS

This feature works really well. Just hit settings and choose ‘Windows’. You will be presented with the screen on the left. Hit open new page and another window will be opened. You can also switch windows from this menu and close them as well by simply selecting the window and hitting the left softkey.
PREDICTIVE INPUT

Whether you are entering a new URL, or a searh term, the predictive/suggestive text helps.
I’ll continue playing with it, meanwhile all of you check it out. The browser sure has potential and just a bit of community based feedback, I’m sure we could have a serious competitor to the default browser. For me its a must install just because of the ability to download anything. Lastly, for a alpha release it is indeed pretty stable.
Thanks Jukka!

This browser is pretty bad, at the moment atleast. For many sites it just downloads the and shows the “Downloads” screen. The input is very bad and the browse need lots of work…it also close many a times. Definitely not recommended at the moment.
I tried Ozone for a while, but was not sold with it! Not the best out there…
I installed O3 on my E71 (200.21.118), got the unsupported message and continued the installation.
With the exception of the 03 browser text, the webpage characters showed up in square boxes. Since I can’t read anything, I can’t use it. Uninstalled.
