Applications, Camera, Nseries »
This is one of the most ground breaking applications and should really be useful for the mobile photography enthusiasts. Mobile phone cameras have improved a lot over time and have come to place where they are sucessfully challenging the domination of dedicated ditigal cameras. However the purists have always had a gripe over the processing algorithms used by the manufactures. Be in noise reduction, sharpening, colour correction there has always been something that could have been done better. Well, here’s your chance. Tea Vui Huang has just created a java …
Applications, S60, WiFi »
Joiku Spot is one of my favourite applications and is great for anyone on the move. It allows a user to use his WiFi enabled S60 device to be used as a portable WiFi router and the internet connection (GPRS/EDGE/3G) of the phone can then be shared by a number of devices. This is specially useful if your laptop doesn’t have bluetooth or there is more than one person who needs the internet connection.
The current beta did have a few bugs and stability issues though and I am pleased to say that a …

My biggest gripe with the default S60 browser has been the (dis)ability to download files what the phone does not recognise itself. So inspite of WiFi and 3G speeds we cannot download a lot of stuff. A lot of times I get emails with .rar archived attachments and inspite of having a kickass smartphone while even lets me edit documents I cannot even get that attachment to my mobile. Silly!
But fear no more, Biggzy has just written an amazing guide (which he briefly mentions in the comments of the previous download manager post) which …

The S60 Safari based browser is one of the best mobile browsers out there, but when it comes to downloads I can’t be that appreciative, in fact the downloading ability has been static since the Nokia 3250 the first S60 v3 phone. Its a pain managing downloads, there is no option to Pause a download and it can only be resumed if the browser crashes and that too in a non user friendly way. Bottomline - it needs a overhaul. What is worse is that it only allows us to …

A lot of people have been howling about the way Symbian Signed is going and criticising the change in system. As of now, nobody without a Publisher ID can create developer certificates and instead users are forced to use the new Online System. Open Signed has some positives and even more negatives although signing files capable of being signed (applications which are using unprotected UID range) is easier now and even need an account is not needed anymore. A lot of great freeware thus currently cannot be signed that way.
Bery from …
N82 »
This is what we were waiting for, the N82 Black is finally a reality. Nokia issued this press release today announcing the Black variant of the N82 which will have inbuilt geo-tagging and the ability to directly upload to Youtube, Flickr etc. This will most likely be implemented in existing N82’s with a firmware upgrade too.
Nokia seems to have got one formula absolutely spot on, introduce a good device, let it sell at a high price point, then slowly let the price fall. Next intoduce it in Black, thrown in a feature …

After the initial pilots in New York and California, the S60 Ambassador program is open for applicants again. Jay Fenton has made a S60 Wordpress Blogging Solution in the fastest time ever. He made this Python based client during the course of a chat with Ewan in just 60 minutes. He’s just released a very early Beta of the application which is now in an installable form and not a mere collection of scripts. That is awesome work. The client allows us to make posts, edit them and so on. There is support for adding image links, paragraphs, links to other websites etc. However doing all of this will …

The folks from the Nokia Research Center in Germany are working on a very exciting prospect called the “noBounds”. The project aims to provide a low-power solution for mobile users to extend Smartphone and Internet Tablet screens and project them to higher resolution external displays such as high definition TV’s, projectors and near-to-eye displays (NED). Via USB or WLAN the project aims to let those devices output video at Full HD (1920×1080p) - 30 FPS. This opens up tremendous possibilities, currently TV out capable phones such as the N95, N82 can …

Apple’s iPhone made a big deal of its positional awareness and it the implications the embedded sensor had for the interface. You rotate the phone and then in SOME applications you can use the phone in the landscape orientation.
Nobody is taking note of the fact that in order to be seen as a native application in the S60 version 3 platform, an application is recommended to support both of the orientations, portrait and landscape.
If you fast forward a little, you can see that Nokia starting implementing accelerometers in their phones …
