Camera, N82, Nseries, Reviews »

[30 Mar 2008 | 11 Comments | ]

To begin this review I decided to look back at my initial impressions of the device when it was announced. As it turns out this is what I had said. “As expected the N82 being an N8x device doesn’t do anything ground breaking which we’ve not seen earlier.”
Now while the above may be technically true, but this still doesn’t accurately describe the N82. After spending some time with the device I am compelled to change my stance. The N82 is a ground breaking device, make no mistake it is. While …

The above picture is from the Mobile Asia Mobile Expo held in New Delhi a little while back. While visiting I came across this stall I acted dumb and asked the sales guy why I needed the solution he was advertising. He started off with a questionnaire, Do I used Internet on my mobile? Do I install stuff? Do I keep bluetooth on? Hell, he asked me everything apart from whether or not I make calls with it. To each of those questions he said then I NEED their product because it gives me …

It is always great to be the first one to do something. I rephrase, to be the first one in the entire freaking world to do something for the very first time! Ricky Cadden, the ‘Symbian-Guru’ will be getting married this Saturday, March 29th, 2008, at 7pm CST and he will be livecasting his entire wedding using 4 Nokia N82’s and the Flixwagon service. He even has a special page setup where we can follow all four camera feeds throughout the day. WOW!
Here’s wishing Ricky and Christina, the bride to be the …

Announcements, UIQ »

[27 Mar 2008 | 4 Comments | ]

The availability of UIQ 3.3 has just been announced by UIQ Technology. The new release adds Opera Mobile 9.5, supporting ‘a full web-experience on mobile devices’, Opera Widgets, UIQ Dashboard amongst other things. The latest release is built on top of Symbian OS v9.3. The progress of UIQ as compared to S60 has been somewhat limited owing to the fact that there is only one major manufacturer i.e. Sony Erricson which makes UIQ devices with mass appeal. Whether or not this release bolsters UIQ adoption in the markets remains to be …

The latest v21 fimrware for the N95-1 is finally available via NSU after being available at Nokia Service Points for some time now. This update brings the Web Runtime support and Flash Lite 3 support to the N95; flash based video in the web browser is finally a go! The complete changelog curiously was out well ahead of the firmware itself and I had posted it here.
This firmware as always will still not be available for operator branded handsets and for some product codes; just wait and watch for now! …

Nokia keeps coming out with a lot of editions be it a Music Edition, Internet Edition, Navi Pack and so on. Here is someone who is turning his N95-1 into a water edition! Please keep in mind that doing this at home is seriously injurious to your phone’s health and should NOT be done!
In case if your phone ever does get wet, the best bet is to take the battery out immediately, to prevent a short circuit and let the phone dry for as long as possible and only then …

N96 »

[25 Mar 2008 | 2 Comments | ]

So far this year’s biggest announcement from Nokia, the latest Nseries Flagship device the Nokia N96 has been reviewed by Eldar from over at Mobile-Review. The huge review, with pictures was originally written in Russian and now has been translated into English. It is well worth a read if you are even remotely interested in the N96.
To conclude he looks at N95 8GB as a potential N96 killer in markets where DVB-H is not prevalent and also weighs the price as a consideration. My own thoughts based on the brief period …

S60, Themes »

[23 Mar 2008 | 7 Comments | ]

Ricky has made an easter theme and put it up for all to download. The thing about the theme is that it has not been created using the usual theme creation tools i.e. no having to mess around with Java tools or having to install an SDK. The theme has been made using the brand new beta of OwnSkin’s Professional Theme Creator. It is a 100% online theme creation application for not just S60 smartphones but a host of other S40 devices and devices from other manufacturers such as LG and …

Tea Vui Huang is indeed a talented developer. The lastest application I’ve come across from him is All-Format Writer a freeware Java J2ME-based application that allows you to create and send out short and simple documents on the mobile phone in various competing ‘next-generation’ electronic document formats. These include OpenDocument Format (ODT), Microsoft’s Office Open XML (DOCX), China’s national electronic document format Unified Office Format (UOF) and the popular Portable Document Format (PDF).
Most Nokia smartphones ship with inbuilt document viewers and this freeware will allow us to create documents on …
